CL:AIRE is pleased to be helping convene a session at next years European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly. As such, an invitation for abstract submissions is extended for the session on 'Advancing understanding and management of urban soils for multifunctionality - connecting research and practice. This event is scheduled to take place in Vienna from April 14 to 19, 2024 and provides a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge research and innovations across various geoscience disciplines.
While urban areas constitute a relatively small fraction of the world's surface, they host over 50% of the global population. Despite their important role in regulating numerous ecosystem services and supporting various soil functions, urban soils are frequently neglected during project planning, construction, and post-development stages. They remain inadequately integrated into policies at all levels. The growing global emphasis on circular economy strategies and green finance further underscores the importance of urban soil resilience and management.
Urban soils face unique challenges characterised by high heterogeneity and exposure to multiple anthropogenic disturbances. These include sealing, compaction, degradation, erosion, pollution, landfilling, premium land take, and the impacts of climate change. These influences collectively undermine the multifunctionality of urban soils, compromise their ability to deliver ecosystem services, and erode their resilience.
In this session, our goal is to deepen our comprehension of urban soil multifunctionality and enhance our ability to integrate this understanding into policies, planning, and development. By creating connections between recent research and innovations across disciplines and sectors, we aim to bridge the gap between theory and practical application.
We encourage submissions from various disciplines, such as field research, modelling, remote sensing, social sciences, as well as case studies from industry and policy domains. We seek to bringing forward knowledge acquired from different disciplines and sectors to help deepen our understanding and capacity to manage urban soil multifunctionality and resilience.
